James Madison's Montpelier

James Madison, Father of the Constitution, architect of the Bill of Rights, and President of the United States, conceived of the foundations of American democracy at Montpelier, his lifelong home. It is still a place to engage in exciting activities, restore body and mind, and envision great things.

Guided tours are available daily of the home of James and Dolley Madison, America's First Lady. The historic restoration now in progress gives visitors the opportunity to witness the rebirth of a presidential home. The 2,650-acre plantation also features exhibitions of elegant furnishings and Madison and duPont family treasures; a formal garden; hands-on fun for kids; active archaeological excavations; two miles of hiking trails through the 200-acre old-growth forest; Madison family and slave cemeteries; a fully-restored freedman's cabin; Civil War encampment sites, museum shop; cafe; and breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountain vistas.
